Competition Day Demands a Competition-Ready Rope
Your rope is your most important piece of equipment. A rope that's not properly prepped can cost you runs. The loop doesn't open right, the feel is off, or worse, it fails when you need it most. Here's how to prep your rope so it performs its best when it matters.
The Week Before Competition
Preparation starts well before competition day.
Inspect Your Rope
Give your competition rope a thorough inspection:
Check for:
- Fraying or fuzzing along the length
- Kinks that won't work out
- Damage near the honda
- Worn tip or burner
- Any unusual stiffness or dead spots
If you find issues, this is the time to switch to a backup rope and break it in.
Verify Your Break-In
Your competition rope should already be broken in, but verify it feels right:
- Throw 50-100 practice loops
- Confirm the feel matches what you expect
- Make sure it's opening and closing properly
- Check that your honda is running smoothly
Clean If Needed
If your rope has accumulated dirt or grime, clean it early enough to dry completely:
- Wash in lukewarm water with mild soap
- Rinse thoroughly
- Hang to dry completely
- Allow 2-3 days before competition
Never clean a rope the night before or day of competition. You risk it not drying properly or changing feel.
Night Before Competition
Final Check
Do a final inspection and feel test:
- Coil and uncoil several times
- Check for any new issues
- Throw a few practice loops (if you have space)
- Confirm honda is clean and smooth
Proper Storage
Store your rope correctly overnight:
- Loosely coiled (not tightly wound)
- Room temperature environment
- Away from heat sources
- Not in a sealed bag if any moisture is present
Prepare Your Backup
Have your backup rope ready:
- Inspected and functional
- Similar break-in level if possible
- Packed and accessible
You probably won't need it, but having it ready eliminates one worry.
Competition Morning
Temperature Acclimation
If there's a significant temperature difference between storage and the arena:
Cold conditions:
- Bring rope into warmer space gradually
- Work it with your hands to warm and soften
- Throw some loops to loosen it up
Hot conditions:
- Keep rope in shade or climate-controlled area
- Avoid leaving in hot truck
- Let it acclimate to arena temperature
Pre-Competition Loops
Throw enough practice loops to:
- Get the rope moving and loose
- Verify feel is correct
- Build confidence in your equipment
- Shake out any overnight stiffness
How many? Usually 20-30 loops is sufficient. Don't overdo it and tire yourself or alter the rope's feel.
Arena Conditions Adjustment
Smart ropers adjust for arena conditions:
Dusty/Dry Conditions
- Rope may feel stiffer
- May need a few extra warm-up loops
- Consider slightly larger loop for better catch
- Shake dust off periodically
Humid/Damp Conditions
- Rope may absorb moisture and feel heavier
- Nylon ropes more affected than poly
- Wipe down as needed
- Throw a few extra to adjust to the feel
Wind
- Heavier ropes handle wind better
- May need to adjust loop size
- Time your throw for lulls when possible
- Commit to your throw. Hesitation in wind makes things worse
Honda Care
Your honda is crucial for loop performance.
Quick Honda Check
Before competing:
- Ensure smooth rotation
- Check for burrs or rough edges
- Verify proper sizing for your rope
- Clean any debris
Honda Adjustment
If your honda feels off:
- Light sanding can smooth rough spots (carefully)
- Wax or light oil can improve rotation
- Don't make major changes on competition day
- Better to switch to backup rope if honda is problematic
Managing Multiple Runs
In events with multiple rounds, maintain your rope between runs.
Between Runs
- Coil and store properly
- Don't leave in sun or extreme temperatures
- Throw a few loops before your next run
- Check for any damage from previous run
End of Session
- Clean off arena debris
- Inspect for wear
- Store properly for next competition
- Note any changes in feel for future reference
What NOT to Do
Avoid these competition day mistakes:
Don't break in a new rope:
- First-run nerves plus unfamiliar equipment is a recipe for problems
Don't over-condition:
- Adding conditioner right before competition can make your rope slick and unpredictable
Don't experiment:
- Competition day isn't the time to try different loop sizes or techniques
Don't neglect your backup:
- Equipment failure happens, so be prepared
Don't leave your rope in the truck:
- Extreme temperatures (hot or cold) affect performance
Building Competition Day Confidence
When you know your rope is prepped correctly, you eliminate one variable. That confidence transfers to your performance.
Preparation checklist:
- [ ] Rope inspected and in good condition
- [ ] Properly broken in
- [ ] Clean and dry
- [ ] Honda running smooth
- [ ] Backup rope ready
- [ ] Stored correctly
- [ ] Warmed up before competition
Go through this checklist until it becomes automatic. Knowing you've done the work lets you focus on executing when you nod.
Common Pre-Competition Problems
Rope feels different than practice:
- Check temperature differences
- Verify it's the same rope (not accidentally a backup)
- Throw more warm-up loops
- Consider slight adjustments to your throw
Honda sticking:
- Clean with dry cloth
- Check for debris or damage
- Light conditioning if rules allow
- Switch to backup if problem persists
Rope feels stiff:
- Work it with your hands
- Throw extra practice loops
- Check for damage that's affecting flexibility
- May need to adapt your throw slightly
Rope feels too soft/limp:
- Could indicate moisture absorption
- May be over-broken-in
- Consider switching to fresher rope
- Adapt by adjusting loop management
Final Thoughts
Your rope is your tool. Treat it well, prep it properly, and trust it to perform. When you've done the preparation work, you can step into the arena confident that your equipment is ready.
